Medical Director - Pathologist
A
board-certified pathologist, other physician, or a doctoral
scientist shall direct the pathology or medical laboratory
service. Such individual shall be qualified to assume the
professional, scientific, consultative, organizational,
administrative, and educational responsibilities for the
services provided. The director shall have sufficient authority
to implement and maintain the Standards.
In all
facilities where anatomic pathology services are provided, a
pathologist shall perform such services. As needed, the director
shall delegate technical responsibility or retain consultative
services from a physician or doctoral scientist qualified for
each discipline offered. |

Interpretation
A.
Qualifications, Responsibilities, and Role of the Medical
Director
To function effectively in fulfilling the duties and
responsibilities as Medical Director, he/she should possess a
broad knowledge of clinical medicine, basic medical sciences,
clinical laboratory sciences, and operations.
The
Medical Director should have the appropriate training and
background to be able to discharge the following
responsibilities:
1.
Medical significance,
Interpretation, and Correlation of Data - Provide
consultations about the medical significance of clinical
laboratory data. Interpret, correlate, and communicate
laboratory data to clinical requestors.
2. Anatomic Pathology
- Perform anatomic pathology procedures as appropriate.
3. Consultations
- Provide consultations to physicians regarding the medical
significance of laboratory findings as appropriate.
4. Medical Staff Privileges
- As applicable, serve as an active member of the medical staff
for those facilities served.
5. Interaction with Others
- Relate and function effectively with applicable accrediting
and regulatory agencies, appropriate administrative officials,
the medical community, the medical device industry, and the
patient population served.
6. Standards of Performance
- Define, implement, and monitor standards of performance in
quality control, quality improvement, and cost-effectiveness of
the pathology and clinical laboratory service(s).
7. Monitoring and
Correlation of Laboratory Data - Monitor all work
performed in the laboratory to determine that medically reliable
data are being generated; correlate laboratory data for
diagnosis and patient management.
8. Quality Improvement
Responsibilities - Assume responsibility for
implementation of the quality improvement plan. The director and
professional laboratory personnel must participate as members of
the various quality improvement committees of the Company.
9. Personnel -
Ensure that there are sufficient qualified personnel with
adequate documented training and experience to meet the needs of
the laboratory.
10. Strategic Planning
- Perform planning for setting goals and developing and
allocating resources appropriate to the medical environment.
11. Administrative and
Management Responsibilities - Provide effective and
efficient administration of the pathology service including
budget planning and control with responsible financial
management, in accordance with the Company’s assignment of such
responsibilities.
12. Educational
Responsibilities - Provide educational programs for
the medical and laboratory staff, and participate in educational
programs of the Company.
13. Research and
Development Responsibilities – If appropriate, plan
and direct research and development appropriate to the facility.
14. Reference Laboratories
- Select and monitor all reference laboratories for quality of
service.
15. Safety -
Implement a safe laboratory environment in compliance with good
practice and applicable regulations.
B. Delegation of
Responsibilities
The director need not perform all responsibilities personally.
Administrative functions may be delegated to qualified
laboratory managers and supervisors. Medical and technical
responsibilities may be delegated to physicians and other
qualified laboratory personnel as appropriate. The director,
however, remains responsible for the overall operation and
administration of the laboratory to assure that quality patient
services are provided. |
Additional requirements include:.
1.
Active
unrestricted medical licensure for the state, territory, or country
where the business unit is located (job offers will be made
contingent on obtaining active licensure).
2.
Successful
completion of the Diagnostics Medical Staff Credentialing process
(job offers will be made contingent on acceptable review):
a.
Verification of Education/Degree
b.
Verification of State (or applicable) Medical License
c.
Verification of Board Certification
d.
Check of
the (United States) National Practitioners' Database and review of
claims against the pathologist (at the discretion of Credentialing
Committee).
e.
Employee
and Contract Applicants must successfully pass an anatomic pathology
slide test examination if applicable.
3.
At least 7
years of prior experience in an inpatient and/or outpatient
laboratory setting.
4.
Board
Certification in a subspecialty area within Clinical or Anatomic
Pathology that is pertinent to the job position is desirable.
5.
Previous
experience in management of other pathologists and/or laboratory
personnel.
Duties and
Responsibilities
1.
Provide
medical consultation on the significance of medical laboratory data,
Interpret, correlate and communicate laboratory data to clinical
requestors
2.
Provide
oversight for Anatomic Pathology and /or Clinical Pathology
Procedures as appropriate
3.
Provide
consultations to physicians regarding the medical significance of
laboratory findings as appropriate
4.
Monitor all
work performed in the laboratory to determine that medically
reliable results are being generated; correlate laboratory data
for diagnosis and patient management
5.
Demonstrate
the following abilities:
a.
proactive
engagement with clients and ability to build customer relations
b.
regularly
consulted by peers as a local subject matter expert
c.
regular
participation in departmental management activities and leadership
role in departmental educational activities
d.
active
participation in external professional activities such as
publishing, educational presentations, panel discussions, etc.
6.
Fulfill
the Clinical Consultant and Testing Personnel responsibilities as
listed in CLIA ‘88 (42 C.F.R. §493.1419 and 1495, respectively).
Additional responsibilities may be required by applicable laws and
regulations.
7.
Fulfill the
responsibilities that have been reapportioned by the
Laboratory/Medical Director as detailed in CLIA ’88 (42 CFR
§493.1407). Additional responsibilities may be defined by applicable
laws and regulations.
8.
Regularly
interact with potential and existing clients by phone and/or
face-to-face meetings to improve customer satisfaction as part of
the sales, account relation and business development processes and
to convey the Values, Vision and Mission of the company.
Reporting Structure
The Medical Directors
will have a dotted line reporting to Corporate Medical and a
straight line reporting to the Business Unit Managing Director.
